Fashion Jewelry Bracelets and Bangles:

Bracelets have been around as long as someone could tie something around their wrists, and when you see some of the teenage fashion today you might be forgiven for thinking bracelets have come full circle.

They developed through Ancient Egypt as a major piece of jewelry which was also a status symbol.  In fact the early Egyptians probably wore the first charm bracelets, but this was more to ward off enemies or evil spirits.

Again you might see a similarity in kids today...  

The wide straps of leather worn on the arms of men and soldiers were known as "Bracels" and this is thought to be the origin of the name.  Although the bracels were adorned with gold, silver and sometimes gemstones, their function was as protective gear.

When women decided smaller bracels were attractive for them to wear, the bracels were renamed to bracelets. Go girls - well done...

Bracelets have been worn by both men and women, and made from various types of materials such as iron, leather, copper, beads, teeth, bones, and then of precious metals such as gold and silver. 

Bracelets have also been worn on the upper portion of the female arm to enhance a sleeveless outfit, and that translates directly from the Male Tattoo.

Today fashion bracelets and bangles are still made from base metals such as copper but most of them are plated in a silver or gold color finish. You can also get some fancy designs which make them look antique. You will also find bracelets adorned with a variety of gemstones, real or synthetic, especially those with glass (paste) or Swarovski Crystals - which are also glass. 

The tennis bracelet has become very popular since it was introduced onto the market.  You can now get these same tennis bracelets set with cubic zirconia to imitate diamonds at much lower cost. Think Bling!

Some fashion Bangles and Bracelets are set with modern acrylics and plastics. These are used to create a trendy bracelet which can look a lot like organic gems such as Pearls, Amber or Ivory. You should be very careful when offered something which looks genuine. Too many people have been caught out by imitations and reproduction Bangles and Bracelets.

Bangles have been around for almost as long as bracelets, and you will find them created from the same materials. The gemstones used are sometimes a smaller version than typically found adorning bracelets, however the effect is still the same. The classic 'Hinged Bangles' beautifully embossed or engraved are often hollow and filled with jewelers wax to make them heavier, so just be careful if you are in the market for those - no matter how pretty or what the seller tells you!

Cubic zirconia is now the best buy for your money and are very popular in fashion bracelets.  The fact they come in a variety of colors also helps make them more popular in costume jewelry design.

Bracelets and Bangles set with Cubic zirconia can be found with all known antique or vintage designs, especially if they are named brands. They have become very collectible and sometimes very rare, even if they were made in the last century.
